Legacy Giving

One of the most exciting efforts in the field of Jewish communities across the country is the attention being given to legacy gifts also known as bequests, after-life, estate or planned giving. We are in the midst of the largest transfer of wealth in the history of the world – and those agencies who reach out to connect with their loyal donors will be better poised to receive future gifts to ensure the strength of their organization and its ability to fulfill its mission.

To help energize and train lay and professional leaders, the Institute has developed two legacy giving projects:

1.  "Create a Jewish Legacy” Program for Camps

To motivate camps to secure legacy gifts from loyal donors, this program, modeled after the ”Create a Jewish Legacy” program of the San Diego Jewish Community Foundation, was launched in January 2008 for six camps and expanded to thirteen more camps in 2009.  The program consists of the following activities:

  • Coaching and training of lay and staff leadership teams on planned giving tools and solicitation approaches
  • Helping camps create a legacy giving action plan and set goals
  • Providing sources for educational information, assistance with marketing and outreach
  • Providing incentive grants upon completion of mutually agreed upon number of donor conversations and donor legacy pledges per year
  • Providing travel stipends for legacy team to attend trainings

2.  "Create a Jewish Legacy" of Western Massachusetts
A legacy gift is a simple and meaningful way to help ensure a strong Jewish future for our community. Please consider leaving a bequest to one or more Jewish organizations that make a difference in your life so that those organizations can continue to make a difference in the lives of others for generations to come. The act of creating a Jewish legacy empowers you to complete the work of your heart.

Create a Jewish Legacy of Western Massachusetts (CJLWMA) is an innovative program that helps Jewish organizations in the region approach their donors for legacy gifts (bequests) in order to ensure that current good work can continue long into the future. Since its launch in June 2008, twenty organizations have joined CJLWMA – day schools, synagogues, and social service agencies. Each group has assembled a dynamic Legacy Team. Together they have learned about the importance of planned giving, mastered endowment basics, and set goals to hold many discussions with their constituents in order to educate them about legacy giving. The results speak for themselves. By the end of 2009, the pilot 13 organizations had received 232 legacy gifts for an estimated total of $6.5 million dollars.

The program’s funding partners, the Jewish Endowment Foundation and the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, not only provide the training, coaching, advertising and marketing materials but also reward organizations that reach their annual goals on time with an incentive grant. The Federations of Western Massachusetts and the Berkshires are program partners, and the Jewish Federations of North America awarded CJLWMA a generous 3-year grant for administrative staff support.
